Who is Barbara Millicent Roberts?
This person has become one of the symbols of the 20th century. She is beautiful, has a chic wardrobe, which can be the envy of the most demanding socialite. She has houses, cars, yachts. Her first profession is a model.
But she has succeeded in more than 80 areas – from a rock star and a paleontologist to a presidential candidate! Her parents – spouses Elliot and Ruth Hendler – in 1945, created a company for the production of children’s toys. One day they decided to create a toy for girls – a doll, which would be not just a doll, but an older friend.
So that she taught girls to take care of herself, instilled the skills of adult life, so that she became a kind of object for various social projects. Girl doctor, girl model, girl astronaut. And in whatever role this girl appeared, she was always decorated and decorated with a white-toothed smile. The leggy beauty first appeared in February 1959, at an exhibition of children’s toys in New York.
However, as they say, Barbara had a predecessor – German Lily, a comic book character and a doll. But Barbara clearly surpassed her in popularity. Barbie first appeared in the windows of toy stores all in the same February 1959. The new doll was dressed in a striped bathing suit. But she had no success with buyers, she was considered vulgar, unsuitable for children’s games.
Then the enterprising creators of Barbie launched an advertisement on TV, and the first batch of dolls was quickly bought at the price of $ 3 apiece. The growth of the most famous doll in the world is 29 centimeters. Until 2000, Barbie had a rotating waist, but did not have a navel. After 2000, Barbie has changed somewhat: the chest has become smaller, the waist has stopped rotating, the hands can now be spread apart, and the legs have narrowed. The hips are wider, and now the legs, like the arms, are spread apart.
Appeared navel. At various times, the doll was worn by the most famous couturiers. In 1992, Barbie made a career as a military medic, she was dressed in khaki suits in a “military style”. Babri gradually overgrown with her friends (black women, red, brunette), more and more she became home, cars and all sorts of accessories. And in 1961, Ken appeared, then girlfriend Midge and sister Skipper. Barbie has a rival – fake, mainly of Chinese origin.
Attitude to Barbie doll ambiguous. Someone thinks that it is a vulgar symbol of the Western way of thinking, unrealistic, capricious, it is full of flaws, for example, its proportions. Some particularly impressionable girls certainly want to be like Barbie, even “Barbie syndrome” has appeared. In addition, it is Barbie who very often becomes a “victim” of child abuse: she is shaved naked, shoved in microwaves, quartered …
There are also moral claims to Barbie: Ken is not her husband, but only a boyfriend. And although Barbie is in an “interesting position” and even Barbie Grandma, critics think that this doll family looks like a glamorous parody of a real family. Someone thinks that there is nothing terrible and immoral in Barbie, it is just a beautiful toy, a good example of style for little girls. In the USSR, this doll appeared along with restructuring – as early as 1989 it could be bought at a fabulous price from speculators, and in the early 1990s – in the shops selling for the currency.
In Russia, attitudes toward Barbie, as in the rest of the world, are ambiguous. We have our own national peculiarities of perception, and this discrepancy between the Russian ideal of beauty and the American standard is the main thing that makes Barbie a subject of controversy. Barbie is scolded for wide shoulders, too thin waist, for long limbs and artificial breast pomp. However, famous fashion designers created and created collections of clothes for the “daughter” of Ruth Hendler. There is Barbie as Marie-Antoinette, Barbie-Elizabeth I Tudor, Barbie-Marilyn Monroe, Barbie-Audrey Hepburn.
A Moscow artist Inna Kuznetsova created the author’s site “Barbie-Fashion” and constantly shows collections of clothes for Barbie. So Barbie is popular and in demand.
