When was the Barbie doll born?

Women born in 1959 are still charming and even sexy. But, unfortunately, not at all young. What can you do, you will not argue with time. Only one woman born that year managed to stay young. And she will always be young. Because this is a Barbie doll, the most famous doll in the world. The doll, which has become the global standard of beauty. Ruth and Elliot Handlers and the first Barbie doll began to be launched on March 9 by the American company Mattel Toys. Now “Mattel Toys” – a large international company that manufactures toys for children and not only toys.
But at the time of creation, in 1945, none of the founders thought about world fame. The founders were two: Harold Matson (Harold Matson) nicknamed “Matt” and Elliot Handler (Elliot Handler; 1916−2011). The company was named by connecting the names of the founders: MattEl. Soon, due to illness, Matson could no longer deal with the affairs of the company and sold his part to Elliot. The place of the second co-owner was taken by Elliot’s wife, Ruth Handler (Ruth Marianna Handler; 1916-2002).
Initially, the company was selling picture frames and furniture for doll houses. They were made by Elliot Handler in his own barn. In 1947, the couple released their first toy, a children’s ukulele guitar. Cheap? However, this cheap stuff sold well. For several years, the company’s sales amounted to $ 2 million.
So this sort of cheap stuff fed the couple and the daughter Barbara who was born. As it is easy to understand, the future doll was named after her. And “invented” Barbie Ruth Handler. She noticed how her daughters like to tinker with dolls, which she cut out of cardboard and which were not baby dolls at all, but adult girls and even women.
My daughter dressed them up in “adult” dresses, which she made from her own paper and sent to “real” studies or “real” work. I don’t know how it is now, but during my childhood such paper dolls were printed in children’s magazines, and a whole paper wardrobe was located nearby. All this should be carefully cut and painted in pencil.
And then the game itself began. Doll dressed and disguised. The girls loved it! What conclusion did Ruth Handler make when she looked at her daughter’s games? Girls like to present themselves as adults, try on adult clothes and caring adults.
And they transfer their dreams of adult life to their favorite dolls. So why not start producing dolls that will be as living and as adults: with clothes, with a house, with furniture in this house. And yes, with breasts. Here, Ruth Handler deliberately violated the rule that all toy manufacturers adhered to: toys are for children, and therefore they must be asexual.
There is no need to fix the attention of kids on all sorts of tits-pussies. Using the example of her daughter’s games, the mother saw that the girls didn’t get stuck on any sexual details at all and considered the breasts to be just women’s adult affiliation. It means that nothing terrible will happen if you make a doll for girls more like a woman than baby dolls that were made for very little kids. So, to the point!
It was decided to release a new doll for the 1959 toy fair, which was to be held in New York. She was called “Barbie Teen-Age Fashion Model”. The doll actually looked like a teenage girl, with a bunch of hair, tied with a tail, in a bathing suit with black and white stripes and high-heeled sandals.
To none of the future young customers was not insulting, Barbie released in two versions: a blonde and a brunette. The doll cost $ 3, but the clothes and other accessories for it should have been bought separately. It is also a well-known trading device, which is currently being successfully used in computer games.
Join some shooter for free, but you will have to spend money on acquiring virtual weapons. New toy was a success. In 1959, more than 350,000 Barbie dolls were sold. In the early 1960s, Mattel’s annual sales amounted to $ 100 million. And the main toy was, of course, the Barbie doll. The company annually updated its range. Barbie mastered new professions, which means she updated her wardrobe, her furniture, her things. Pretty soon, Barbie had a friend Ken and younger sister Skipper.
Ken was the son of Ruth Handler. And Skipper was a kind of compromise with strict parents who didn’t like that Barbie looked too adult and that her body forms were overly challenging. Skipper had a girl, and her outfit, lifestyle and appearance was like that of a girl, and not like that of a completely mature, though always young, Barbie.
From the very beginning, the doll was produced in two versions: a blonde and a brunette. The first black Barbie appeared in 1981. Said their word and feminists. Under their pressure, Barbie changed her profession. There was a fashion model, became a business woman. Down and Out trouble started.
