What toys do our children need?

Wishing to encourage a seven-year-old godson for his excellent studies, she decided to give him a valuable gift — some useful and clever toy. Or a sweet, “iconic” one, which is kept for many years and always fondly remembers the one who presented it.

In the toy store, I was not about fifteen … no, much more. Sons at an early school age dived into the world of virtual games – first they “chopped” into the primitive “Atari”, then it seemed that the prefix “Dandy” appeared, a little later – “Sega” …

Of the last toys that were bought in the store, there were eerie transformers, and another small class in the fifth was busy with the “tamagochik” until he safely died of old age — that was drama! And the elder, at fifteen, already cut through our then absolutely far from the proud title of “club village” the village and its environs on the GDR plastic Trabant, rented as it were from a retired neighbor.

So, the trip to the nearest “Children’s World” turned out to be a discovery going wild with me – a great variety of toys was stunned! I wandered between the shop windows and counters, looking at the doll houses with all their abundant contents – furniture, dishes and interiors, the dolls themselves, their modern wardrobes, their fabulous horses, their cars, their brutal gentlemen …

Stuffed toys are almost living animals of all kinds and subspecies, of all sizes – from giant, almost life-sized bears, monkeys and giraffes, to tiny furry animals of an unspecified breed that fit in the children’s palm. And also cartoon characters, strange designers, an extensive fleet of vehicles – from small colorful cars to hefty electric cars, unimaginable duduk, whistles and tweeters, “weapons department” with space blasters, Indian tomahawks and knight’s halberds, along with armor, water guns and pistol guns, and automatic pistols. , on destructive power close to trauma.

And also … In general, I didn’t buy anything for my godson, I couldn’t choose. He has so many toys, a wagon and ten small carts – will not my gift become another unremarkable rubbish in his vast toy farm? On the way home, standing in a hopeless Friday-evening traffic jam, it seemed to me that if in my childhood, which fell in the era of developed socialism, there were such toys …

I would have grown a completely different person. But how? “Soviet childhood wooden toys” is a famous saying. Wooden cubes were covered with cut-colored color pictures – one of them needed to be folded together. And you could not add anything, and build towers, houses and entire castles – if there were a lot of cubes. I had a lot, and I basically built it – it was not interesting to put together unpretentious pictures. But building castles, populating them with little plastic soldiers, imagining that all this is entirely fabulous princes is interesting.

And I also remember a little iron clockwork cat, she was funny humming and rolling from side to side. If you hold it in your palms for a long time, it becomes warm and as if alive. “Our” dolls, unlike the deficient German ones, were rather miserable, with glued hair, poor clothes, and all for some reason in aprons. I did not like dolls and did not suffer from their imperfections.

Another thing – the animals. I still keep two of my main bears – in the attic in a cardboard box, wrapped in silk paper, like in a shroud. Sometimes, sorting out old things, I stumble upon them, and the aching feeling of acute pity is not clear to whom, to what — touches to tears … They are such ugly, old ones, one has buttons attached to one’s eyes instead of eyes, in the dim garret it seems that this is senile blindness.

How I loved them! As I tried in childhood to divide my attention and love for these bears, so that none of them “was hurt”! I wrapped them up when it was cold, sat them by the window so that they were not bored, shared their little secrets and big offenses, whispered their first stishats into teddy ears … And in some children’s magazine – “Funny pictures”, perhaps, at one time such a “toy” was printed: it was necessary to cut out the painted girl and the outfits attached to it. The girl should have been glued to the cardboard, and the outfits could be changed according to her mood, combined at her own discretion, and it was possible to draw the most, and then “make happy” the new girl with new original toilets – which we did.

Why, there, at times, we girls had enough of a burnt match and two dandelion flowers to create a unique image of a princess. You split the stem into ribbons, put it in a puddle – and twisted curls began to twist, you put it on a match – the princess’s head is ready with a glamorous hairstyle. From the other end you string one more flower – this is a skirt. And here the little fairy-tale world is gradually being inhabited by the characters you created.
